Naomi Watts, no mean actress, is reduced to playing Diana as a heat-seeking missile in a pastel suit. Hobbled by a dreadful script, Watts has none the less done her best impersonation of the famous figure: she has nailed the small, shy smile and the up-under-the-mascara gaze. But she generates barely a flicker of Diana’s wattage: the film does little to convey either the virtues or the flaws of its subject, her potent combination of vulnerability, egocentricity, kindness and a talent for manipulation, allied to a deep well of need. Instead, this Diana appears both odd and tepidly scheming.
